programs used

VLC media player
Freemake Video Downloader
Photoshop CS6

1. GETTING THE VIDEO
2. GETTING THE SCREENCAPS
3. LOAD SCREENCAPS
4. CREATING THE GIF
5. SHARPENING THE GIF
6. SAVING THE GIF

1. GETTING THE VIDEO

Get your video in any format you want since VCL media player reads almost every video format.

I’ve left you a link to a YouTube (and other webs) video downloader that works really nicely. You can as well try YTD Youtube Downloader and for films µTorrent + kickass torrents website

2 GETTING THE SCREENCAPS

If you get the screencaps with any other program skip this step.

Open your video with VLC. You will need to use hotkeys for this part so go to Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys

There there will be a really long list of different actions look for ‘Next Frame’ and ‘Take Video Snapshot’ and link them to whichever hotkey you want. I personally named them e and r respectively.

Now that this got done if your video looks pixelled or weird go to Video and turn off the option ‘Always Fit Window’ don’t worry if the video gets cut the screencaps will be saved full-size.

It’s time to take the screencaps. Go to the part you want to gif and stop the video. Click the hotkeys for next frame and take video snapshot until you get everything you need.

3. LOAD SCREENCAPS

Open Photoshop.

File > Scripts > Load Files Into Stack…

This action gets all the images you select in one same document as different layers. A window will pop up, click ‘Browse…’

Now look for the screencaps you took earlier. I get mine to get saved on My Pictures folder but you can save yours wherever you want. Select all the screencaps you need and click ‘Ok’. Depending on how many screencaps you selected it will take a while to load. Click okay when Photoshop is done loading and wait for it to create the document, this can take a while too.

4. CREATING THE GIF

Make sure you have the Timeline window showing if not Window > Timeline

Resize the gif. Tumblr default post size is 500 px wide, for two columns gifset 245 px, etc. Just do the math! (the gap between gifs in a gifset is 10 px) You can cut the gif, make it 500 x 650 px or 245 x 102 px or however you want, be creative!

Now click ‘Create Video Timeline’ and next the button on the left bottom corner

image

Now click the button on the upper right corner and click ‘Make Frames From Layers’. After that in the same drop down (more like drop up) menu look for ‘Reverse Frames’

After that ‘Select All The Frames’ next click the little number under any frame and set the speed of the gif. Depending on the action you’re giffing you’ll have to choose one speed or another. The ones I use the most are: 0,07 / 0,1 / 0,12

Now a quick lesson on buttons

image

Use 1 to get back to the other look of the Timeline

Use 2 to make your gif loop Once/3 Times/»>Forever«<

Use 3 to get to the first frame

Use 4 to go one frame forward, one frame back

Use 5 to go to the last frame

Use 6 to tween

Use 7 to duplicate a frame

Use 8 to delete a frame

And with this you have a plain normal gif.  You can use PSDs now or create your own colouring for the gif, add text and textures. Remember:

5. SHARPENING THE GIF

This step is not necessary but recommendable.

Select all the frames.

Select all the layers except the adjustments ones.

Click 1 (button lesson).

Filter > Convert for Smart Filters

The layers window should now look like this:

image

Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen

Play with the settings until you get what you want and gif sharpened!

6. SAVING THE GIF

File > Save for Web…

image

*open in new tab for original size*

Make sure 1 says GIF

I recommend you to keep 2 always as pattern but play with the options to change the gif size!

3 is the quantity of colour the gif has, the less the smaller the gif will be but the worse the quality will be so be careful.

4 is once again the times your gif will loop. Forever is what we look for gifs but it can be changed to Once or 3 Times.

5 is how much your gif occupies. The biggest a 500 px gifcan be is 1MB, as you can see my gif is over 1MB so I will have to reduce the colour or delete frames. Black and white gifs occupy less. The biggest a 250 or less px gif can be is 2 MB.

Fit your gif to the MBs it should occupy and save it and that’s it you have a rad gif! (◡‿◡✿)
